With the arrival of summer, the epilator once again takes center stage among personal care appliances. But like any frequently used appliance, it needs proper maintenance to perform at its best. Why check your epilator before summer?
Intensive use during the warmer months subjects the epilator to greater wear and tear. The blades lose their edge, the battery may not hold a charge as well as before, and the charger may present problems if it's been in use for years. A quick check before the season starts will save you unpleasant surprises.
The parts that wear out the most
1. Foil or epilator head
This is the part that suffers the most from use. Manufacturers recommend replacing it every 12-18 months with normal use, or sooner if you notice that epilation is less effective, your skin is more irritated, the epilation process takes longer, or the device makes more noise than usual.

2. Battery
If your epilator no longer holds a charge as it used to, or shuts off before you finish, it's a sign that the battery has reached the end of its useful life. Replacing it is much more economical than buying a new device.

3. Charger or power cord
The charger is a part we often ignore until it fails. A bent cable, a loose connector, or simply wear and tear from years of use can cause the epilator to stop charging correctly.

Maintenance tips between uses
- Clean the head after each use. Most epilators include a small brush to remove hair residue. Do this with the device off and unplugged.
- Dry it thoroughly if it's suitable for wet use. Even if it's water-resistant, always store it dry to prevent internal corrosion.
- Do not leave it charging indefinitely. Once 100% charged, unplug it to preserve the battery.
- Store it in its case or pouch. Protect the head from dust and bumps when not in use.
- Check the cable periodically. If it has pronounced bends or the insulation is damaged, replace it before it causes a bigger problem.
When is it worth repairing and when to buy new?
As a general rule, if the cost of the replacement part is less than 40-50% of the price of an equivalent new appliance, repair is the smartest — and most sustainable — option. A mid-to-high-end epilator like the Braun Silk-épil 9 can cost more than €100; much more if it comes with all its accessories, replacing the battery or charger for less than €15 is an easy decision.
